So I recently got the lenovo Y50-70 and it came with a 5400rpm 1tb hdd+ 8gb ssd. I know the ssd acts as a smart cache, but I am thinking of replacing it with a 1tb 7200rpm hdd? Will my performance increase or decrease ? Does the 8gb ssd cache make any difference? Thanks.

If you replace the SSD, performance will drop. How much depends on how well the caching works as well as your normal workload.

If you have 2 2.5 inch bays, getting a 1TB for storage and a SSD for Windows things would fly :). Your wallet may cry however.

You may also want to look at SSHDs since they have a small SSD integrated with a hard drive. This uses the small SSD act as a cache for the hard drive as well(this increases performance depending on your use.).

Actually, the hard disk I have now is a SSHD.

Edit: I've upgraded at least 10 computers with ssd's, fusion drives, sshd's. Going from an sshd to 7200rpm will most definitely feel slower, especially when booting. But as others have said if you don't need the space, and speed is the goal just going for a smaller ssd like a 256gb or 512gb might be the better option.

In that case, I think you would notice the difference for sure.

How much depends on how read or write intensive your computer use is.
