So.... I have access to a few of these devices and would absolutely love to know if I could in theory use it at home with existing equipment, i.e. cable modem and standard Cat5 cables?

It is a Cisco unit air-lap1252ag-a-k9

Any thoughts or I am just dreaming?

It depends on the exact model. Some can run in the lightweight mode or normal other only run in the lightweight mode. Cisco has so many devices its hard to say but some of their devices are bricks if you do not have a controller. Some very old ones I have used would even load the firmware on boot from the controller.

You are going to have to study the manual to see if there is a way to set any options. I know a cisco sales guy commented that it was a advantage to not be able to configure them locally because no one could steal them or make changes.....more likely it means cisco can make more money.
