Hi,

Recently my new EVGA FTW z170 motherboard came in and I tried to insert my old DDR3 RAM from the z77 chipset. I discovered that it didn't fit! I thought that DDR3 was supposed to be compatible for the z170 chipset - what's wrong?

So, since it isn't compatible, I decided to search for some new ram, particularly the G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 2x8gb DDR4 RAM (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S0DBGFC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00). Will it be compatible with my motherboard (http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-LGA-1151-3200mHz-Motherboard-140-SS-E177-KR/dp/B013ALA6T0/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1444111335&sr=1-1&keywords=evga+z170+ftw) since it is not on the RAM list (https://www.evga.com/support/motherboard/)?

Solution
Almost all Z170 motherboards need DDR4 memory.

Only one type of DDR3 can be supported, and most Z170 motherboards (including yours) simply do not support DDR3 in any form. And that one type of DDR3 memory is only DDR3LP (low power) and only at 1.2 volts. Using any higher voltage DDR3 can destroy the memory controller in your CPU. Effectively killing the CPU.

As for compatibility, compare any memory you intend to buy with this list until you find an exact match for a kit of memory on this list:
