Toshiba or HGST or Seagate?

I am fed up with failing hard drives.

I once had two Maxtor drives that were still perfect in SMART after ten years of near 24/7 operation... I only retired them because they were 40GB and became too small to run. These days it seems I am lucky to get 4 years from a drive. I have had a few drives die prematurely recently: less than 3 years old.. it's not good enough!

I understand the new Toshiba drives are built in the former Hitachi factory in China, so what platform are the HGST drives made by WD? Are they based on WD blue? They can't be Hitachi because WD was only allowed to keep the 2.5 and SSD side of Hitachi following the takeover.. and which 4TB Seagate model is the one that backblaze has had good success with?

I want the best bang for my buck but I want solid reliability. I was wary of Chinese drives, but maybe if Hitachi was so great according to backblaze I should not be wary of a new Toshiba drive. And if the HGST is based on a WD blue perhaps I shouldn't be wary of them? What are the new HGST drives?

I just want to know what I am getting and where it is from and I want proven reliability...

I want a bigger drive say 3TB to 6TB to use externally in a NAS or caddy..

I have 1TB WD blues internally, and I trust WD, but the blues only seem available in 1GB, and the bigger capacity blacks are too expensive for me and I don't want the intellipower of the greens and the reds aren't that competitively priced for a slower drive IMO..

Any thoughts?

WD Red 3TB's are the way forward if you don't want to invest in Blacks, they aren't much more than Seagates but defiantly worth the extra. I wouldn't touch any other drives after my experiences with WD, they have been fantastic and haven't been let down by one yet.

Yeah I trust WD, though I have had one fail on me prematurely.. I have had three Seagates fail prematurely so I am a bit angry with them.. but then they bought Samsung and the Samsung 1TB drive I have is perfect still after 5 years.

What is so special about the reds?

I have decided to go with who offers the longest warranty on an internal HDD even if it means blowing my budget.. I am fed up of replacing drives after 3 years..

Am I correct with the following warranty periods?

WD
Blue = 2 years?
Red = 2 years?
Green = 2 years?
Black = 5 years

HGST = 3 years?

Toshiba = ?

Seagate = 3 years?
