I was connected and inside of my networks IP last night trying to set up router repeater settings and I got to the point where I disabled my network security, added the MAC address for the new router (repeater) and it also prompted me to enter a new IP address for some reason. I also made sure my base router was on channel 6. When I tried to enable the repeater function, it kicked me off the wifi and I was down until I reset the cable modem and main router. My IP address before was 192.168.1.1 and now it is 72.XX.XX.XX. I am now unable to access my IP login even by typing in the IP address found in RUN > CMD > IPCONFIG.

Please help me. By the way, the router is a Netgear.

Solution
By what you have told me, it seams that your router was turned into an access point. It is now acting transparent, and giving you the same result as if you plugged your PC directly into the modem. Netgear routers can usually be reset or there is a button to turn off this feature.
