Should I overclock my athlon 860K?

Is it worth attempting to overclock this CPU to get more performance out of it?

Specs:

AMD Athlon x4 860K processor @ 3.7GHz (4GHz turbo)
Nvidia Geforce 750Ti 2GB MSI
1600MHz 8GB DDR3 Memory
1TB 7200RPM HDD
Motherboard: Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD2

Current cooler: Artic Alpine GT 64 Rev.2

If so, how would I go about doing this? I've never done any OC before, but it does sound interesting to learn and if it really does help performance, then that's a bonus.

With that motherboard I wouldn't. It's not made to do well with overclocking. Your CPU might throttle or your motherboard might overheat. Either way some sort of instability I would think.

Plus that CPU Cooler is not fitting for overclocking either. So also your CPU could overheat easily.

The 860K is made for overclocking. With that being said, you definitely need a better CPU cooler. Also, your motherboard will likely hold you back. You can probably get a mild overclock and be fine. I wouldn't try to go past 4.2ghz on that motherboard.

Thanks

I've noticed that whenever my CPU load reaches near 100% on all cores, the cores will randomly start to throttle (not all at the same time) to 1.7GHz and then go back up to 3.7GHz - results in degraded performance. This happened during a Sony Vegas render attempt using the CPU only (I wanted to see if it throttled and it did).

Should this be happening?

That is called throttling and is a good indicator that you will NOT be overclocking on that motherboard. Throttling is a motherboard safety feature to prevent damage from overheating. It is common with AMD cpus on cheapo motherboards.

Wouldn't a decent cooler help keep temps away from nearing dangerous levels, though?

While this cooler isn't ideal for overclocking, it shouldn't be having issues dealing with the stock speed, should it?

Would "undervolting" help in that case, then? It's currently @ 1.3875v according to AMD overdrive. Doesn't throttle at stock clock unless cores are under high load (90% constant load) for over 2+mins or so
