How can I add another Hard Drive?

I obtained an additional hard drive from a friend, however I already have a 500GB Hard Drive in my computer. I know how I can physically install the new hard drive, but what then? How can I add it in and use it for extra storage in my computer? Any help or links would be greatly appreciated.

1) Physically install the new drive.

2) If you are using Windows you should go to Device Manager and format the new drive. It should show up under the available disks section.

3) After the format the disk should show up in 'My Computer' as an empty free disk for you to use.
