Hey guys,

I have built a PC about a year ago. Since the machine is heavily used primarily for video editing and motion graphics, I've always noticed the performance being mediocre. Since it is my means of a second job, I have had back to back projects, keeping me busy from really getting down to troubleshooting. Now I am finally on a break and really need help. My build below, followed by problems experienced. Thanks in advance for anyone's response and time.

Asus X79 Deluxe 2011

Intel Core i7-4930K Ivy Bridge-E 3.4GHz LGA 2011

G.SKILL Sniper Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3

GIGABYTE GV-N760OC-4GD GeForce GTX 760 4GB 256-Bit

Crucial M500 240GB SSD (running 2 as a Raid 0)

HGST Deskstar NAS H3IKNAS40003272SN(0S03664) 4TB - Backup external drive.

RAIDMAX RX-850AE 850W ATX12V power supply

CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i Extreme Performance Water cooler

Problems I have experienced:

I can't Overclock for the life of me. Just going to 3.8 or 4.0, makes the PC unstable. This is OC through the BIOS (updated to latest) or trying through the Asus software. Nothing seems to work, so I run the PC at its stock settings at 3.4 ghz.

I always thought it might be the memory I purchased. No real reason to think it. Just a hunch. I was thinking maybe I needed to upgrade the memory to newer specs, but then these would go to waste.

Secondly, when using premier CS6 or after effects, editing in 1080p or even in 720p, I get hung up on frames, where playback misses seconds. I even have my preview window set to the lowest playback quality allowable, at 1/4 resolution, and I still get hung up.

This happens almost all the time, with any video edit I am doing. This is crucial to my ability to edit quickly and the whole point I went from an iMac to a built PC. I needed performance and ability to upgrade parts for longevity. With these slow speeds I am experiencing during playback, renders and exports, I can't push out projects fast enough for my clients. Its taken an impact overall on my productivity.

I was thinking of trying to sell it and start over. Maybe its the motherboard, maybe the ram, maybe the graphics card. I can't tell and not sure how to figure it out.

Also, the PC has been extremely louder in the past few months. Went from running quietly to running like a small server. I don't ever leave the PC on more than a day or two. Temps seem to be consistent with an average just below 30 degree C.

Any guidance is well appreciated. My primary focus is speed.

What exact operating system are you using?

Have you checked in task manager to see what programs are using RAM , and if any are holding RAM when closed ?

Have you checked the waterblock is firmly attached to the processor and that the thermal paste was correctly applied?

Hi Outlander,

Thanks for your response. Currently on Win 10, same performance was happening on Win 7 and 8.

Yes, have done both. I reapplied the thermal paste a few times when I first did the build, to make sure I was doing it right. Task manager never really shows any other programs using RAM outside of the norm. Example, when I am editing, most of the RAM is allocated to the editing/graphic programs.

Part of your problem is probably that horrible Raidmax power supply. It most likely is not providing stable power, to your system. You built a great system, overall, but handicapped it with a junk PSU. This is a good deal right now, and is a seasonic built unit.

Thanks for your time and help. I'll order a new PSU and give it a shot. I was thinking of trying to sell all the parts and start over lol. When I saw the Microsoft conference yesterday and they did an edit on Premiere with the Surface book, I was like, WTH... its faster than my build and its a fraction of the size and close to the same cost...

Any other ideas that I can look at? I ended up with replacement EVGA Supernova G2 - 850w. I am about to install it tonight and run some test but not sure what to look for, to know if this corrects the problem.

I am also thinking of swapping the SSD to a 1 x 500 GB drive, to run the OS and Editing software, then use one of the 240GB for a capture scratch/rendering drive.

Alright guys, I swapped out the power supply, but unfortunately, I am still back to square 1. A slight over clock to 4.0 sent my PC to freeze up. Had to boot into bios and change it back to XMP profile 1, which is 3.9.
