Cisco Catalyst 2960X Stack and FC Uplink

Hello Guys!

We have a network project for our customer. In few words the topology gonna look like that:
- 5 switches Cisco Catalyst 2960-X (WS-C2960X-48TD-L)
- two sites (less than 100m away)
- 2 switches in one site (stacked using Cisco FlexStack technology)
- 3 switches in second site (Flex Stack as well)
- There will be two Fibre connections between those stacks (Single-Mode Fibre; <100m length, 10Gbps each)

My questions:
- Will the connection between sites be like 20Gbps in summary?
- Is there any possibility to have that two stack have one management IP address, to login as to one device - I think no but please correct me if I'm wrong

The amount of traffic will mostly depend on the traffic pattern between the machines on the switch groups. By default 1 connection will be blocked by spanning tree between the switches but you can use multi instance spanning tree and use both if you design carefully but you would have to be lucky to really get 20g. If you run them as port aggregated connection instead your limitation will be that port aggregation balances by session and not by packet. In both cases it really depends on the traffic pattern. A single session between 2 machines would likely never use more 10g. Not sure how advanced the layer 3 capabilities or these devices are and if you could use a load balance by packet over layer 3 point to point or not.

Each stack will have a single management ip and appear more or less as a chassis switch with multiple 48 port cards.

In the meantime I also asked some other people and it is correct - without link aggregation configured on both sites for FC connection, STP protocol will block one link. All I need to do is to setup aggregated link to have it as one logical connection - POSSIBLE maximum speed 20g - that's exactly our goal :)

What about that management issue? It is also correct what you said and what I thought. Different stacks - different IP. My soultion to have one management possibility is to use Cisco Network Assistance software - looks good enough to manage multiple devices from one place :)

Spanning tree will only block 1 link if you only have one spanning tree instance. You can define multiple spanning tree instances and put some vlans on one and other vlans on the other. By default cisco uses per vlan spanning tree so you do not even have to define spanning tree instances you can just change the metric on the FC for each vlan. Both links will have some vlans blocked and other forwarding.
