When building a low end system without a GPU and sub 100 $ CPU, will an AMD APU or Intel Pentium have better graphics for basic things like light games and video playback? And which is better for 4k, performance wise?

Solution
The AMD APU would be better for what you want to do. An article here: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_kaveri_7850k&num=3 is discussing it and comparing benchmarks. You should check that out and see if you want to go with AMD or Intel but personally I think you should get the APU with fast ram because it could really give you a jump on the intel CPU's. I have used a APU from AMDS before and I was able to render 1080p videos in sony vegas while being able to multitask and play games. And if you want my recommendation on which one you should get I would go with AMD A10-5800K Trinity Quad-Core it a great processor and it is not expensive at all. This is the one I used and not to mention that I was able to play some...

the AMD APU will be better for gaming in a non desecrate GPU situation. Intels current generation (skylake) iGPU is capable of accelerating 4k video decoding, i do not know about AMD's APU's. You will be running your games at 1280x720 if your looking to get playable frame rates from either, so it wont be anything good looking on a 4k display.

im taking a guess you have a 4k display if your asking about 4k playback (well, UHD). does this display support Display Port or is it HDMI only? (AMD hardware at this time does not support HDMI 2.0 which is a deal breaker for many)

For video playback, it doesn't matter - I have a Broadwell i7-based laptop running 2x 1440p and 1x 1080p screen off of the IGP, which can run multiple full-screen videos simultaneously without problem (this is 20% more pixels than a single 4K screen). For games, I believe the AMD APUs perform better.

Light games and video playback, even at 4K, will run with better graphics performance on a similarly priced AMD APU when compared to an Intel Pentium. Just keep in mind that if you want to play games in 4K, even low settings may be difficult with such low end systems.

Hopefully I helped you and if I did then set this as a solution so other people that need help with the same problem are able to see the answer and also it helps me out.
