I just installed a new GPU in my desktop. I plugged in my VGA to the motherboard and nothing shows up. I have to plug the DVI from my new GPU into the monitor right? just confirming .

You have to use the video ports on your GPU, not the ones on your motherboard.

If your GPU only has DVI connections then one of them is likely a DVI-I that has both DVI and VGA connections that will support using a DVI-VGA adapter.
