Computer Loses Connection to Router When Network Changes

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with my ADSL Modem/Router. I can access the Internet and router settings normally, but if another computer connected to the router (all wired connections) is turned on or off, I get disconnected from the network - Can't access Internet, can't even access router config.

Only way I've been fixing it is by restarting the router every time this happens - which gets annoying. I'm trying to find out why it's doing this and if possible fix it adequately.

The router/modem in question is:

Huawei HG531s V1
300Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Router

Computers are running Win 8.1 and Win7

When you say "I get disconnected from the network" do you mean that just the computer you are on gets disconnected or do all other devices also get disconnected at that time? The Huawei only has four LAN ports so the most you have is four wired computers including your own. Correct?

Get everthing up and running again and check the Huawei's indicator lights per the manual:

Turn off one computer and see what if anything changes.

You have a mixed environment (8.1 and 7) and there is quite a bit of network handshaking going on behind the scenes. One thing that must be established is which device is the Master...

You have a mixed environment (8.1 and 7) and there is quite a bit of network handshaking going on behind the scenes. One thing that must be established is which device is the Master Browser. And also the backup. That function can shift as the various computers go on or off. Very easy to get all scrambled up. The connected devices all end up looking for a device that is off-line and thus "get lost".

You can use the netstat command from the command prompt to look at the status of your network and learn more about what is going on.

Also use ipconfig /all on each computer to see what its networking configuration and expectations are.

Just need to narrow things down a bit and that will take a bit of effort to first become comfortable with using the tools and then interpreting the results.

Please post your findings.


Print out the ipconfig /all for each wired device.





That will establish a baseline. Turn off one of the computers and see what changes.
