Hi, I've just bought a new xbox 360 controller and am now trying to connect it to my pc, but it refuses to work. I've tried to read lots and lots of guides to know how to fix this issue, but none of the tips apply to my issue.
My controller only shows up as an unidentified USB instead of an unidentified object, how do I fix this issue or is my controller broken?

From what I know, W10 has some issues with automatic driver installations, often leaving behind a generic placeholder driver as the right one.
Try downloading and installing the 360 gamepad drivers manually from Microsoft's Download Center.

My problem is not really that I can't get the drivers, but the fact that my computer doesn't even recognize my controller as a game pad, it just says 'unidentiied usb'

As he said they do have many issues however are not unusable. This does solve why it comes up as a generic usb device. I believe if you download the proper driver and install it it should work. You may have to go into device manager right click on the generic usb and assign it the proper driver.
