so i have 120gb ssd a 2tb hdd and a 1 tb external hdd. i want to move my os (windows 8.1) from my hdd to my ssd without having to delete all of my steam games. is it possible to move my steam files and other files to my external and then download my os to my ssd afterwords moving my files back to my hdd and keeping my external as a back up?

Solution
You should be able to do that.

The easiest way to do this is:

1) Transfer (not copy, transfer) your steam game files to the external HDD.

2) Transfer all data you can to your external HDD so that you have no more than about 100GB left on your OS HDD

3) Turn off your rig. Plug in your SSD (keep your current HDD plugged in as well).

4) Boot up your system and use a cloning tool to clone the internal HDD drive to the SSD (most SSD's have this software available on their website, we can help you find one if you need)

*You might need to format your SSD drive before using a cloning tool. If so, go to Windows Device Manager and format your SSD drive in 'nfts'.

5) If the clone was successful, power down your rig and unplug your old HDD...

6) If the SSD drive works you can now x-fer the files back from the external HDD.

Solution
No that is fine, I was implying that after you copy your files over to the external drive that you delete them from the original HDD so that your final HDD size is less than 100GB. You won't be able to clone your HDD drive to the new SDD if it has too much data on it.

Sorry for the confusion.

okay so after i did like 5 hours of copying it got to 98% percent and says "FILE TOO LARGE" "The file 'GameDataEbl.bdt' is too large for the destination file system" the file size is only 12.2 GB and the only options it gives me are skip and cancel. being that this file is 12gigs i thought it was pretty important and didnt want to just skip it strait away. any ideas on what i should do?

Is this too large for your backup drive, or too large for your new SSD?

The GameDataEbl.dbt is a Steam file that you'll want to keep if you can. If you're running out of space either on your backup drive or your SSD I would choose 'skip' for now and hope the rest of the transfer finished. After that you'll know you'll need to manually save that file after the rest of the transfer is complete.
