No access to web-pages, but able to ping (multiple devices/routers)

I've read other topics about it here, but my situation is somewhat unique. I can successfully ping websites from the command line (PC)/Network utility (Mac), but can't open any pages in internet browsers. This applies to all devices/OS/browsers (Win, OSX, iOS, Android) as well as apps and software that requires Internet access in the household. At the same time the incoming e-mails (in Mac mail app) can come through (!). I have 2 routers — AirPort Time Capsule and the standard router from ISP. I tried them both, same zero result.

ISP hesitates to send help, they don't see any issues on their side of the line yet.

Any ideas?

Morning,

It is most likely a DNS issue.

Goto command prompt and run it as an administrator,

Type the following command,

nslookup

and tell me the results of which appear on screen.

Hi again,

It looks like your computer isn't being assigned the default DNS server from your ISP

First of all I would like you to run these commands in command prompt (in-order of list)

iphonfig /release

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /flushdns

Do all of this in one window and input each command pressing enter after each one.

After that I would like you to watch this video:

Follow everything that the guy says except when he inputs the new DNS Server addresses use these:

Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

Issue should be resolved.

Unfortunatelly, it isn't.

nslookup shows

Default Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

but still no access to regular browsing.

Hi Nerdy, I'm not getting any. It seems to be loading the page saying "waiting for 'www...'" but never gets to open it. But I'd waited for 5 minutes at most. Perhaps I could wait till it shows the error message or opens the page, if it helps.

Go into a command prompt type the following and restart

netsh winsock reset catalog

Also go into a web browser and in the address bar type 64.233.167.106

Does google come up?

If it doesn't disable your firewall and anti virus and see if you can load a web page. If you can load a web page re-enable one at a time and see which is causing the conflict.

Could you specify which line precisely do you need me to see in 'ipconfig /all'? DNS Servers are set to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

As for the firewall/anti-virus, this issue appears on every device in the household, not just PC/Windows. Do you think a firewall on a single device can block internet access for every other device on the network? Anyway, I'll give it a go in a sec.

Oh sorry I did not read that. Firewall shouln't be an issue if it is on all computers

Have you tried turning off both the routers for thirty seconds and then switching them back on?

Also when you put 64.233.167.106 in to a browser did anything come up?

Yes, tried that. The ip you suggested doesn't take me anywhere as well.

On a side note: disabling Avast antivirus sends Win 8 to BSOD. Thanks Joe, another problem found

Tried connecting in Safe mode, same result. If I wait long enough I get the 'err connection reset' error.

One more thing:

I have what is called 'WiNet', an ISP sollution for rural areas. Don't really know how to describe this technology, but the idea is there's a small antenna attached high above the house, and the LAN cable going from antenna to a converter, which has to be powered in order to work. Then I use a seperate LAN cable to connect the converter with my router. So perhaps the converter is underpowered, or I'm have another hardware malfunction rather then a software issue...

Oh no!

So how are you setup exactly? Which router are you currently trying with?

Modem > router > devices?

try skipping out the router and see if any of your devices load web pages if directly wired into the modem.

Used the wrong term, not converter, it's a PoE adapter which then goes to my Wi-Fi router. I connected directly to PoE adapter skipping the Wi-Fi router and still no internet access in any browser/app. But, but, but - pings still go through.

I must say I am stumped. I am not very familiar with the style of setup you have. Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will come along and give you a solution. If I think of anything else to try i'll post back here.

Edit: just quickly check your machines are not hiding behind a proxy either.

Control panel > internet properties > connections. It should say there. or you can check via your web browsers settings menu.

Hi Joe, no, it's not the proxy either, all revelant boxes are unchecked. I guess it must be some sort of ISP firewall / filter I am behind, but have no idea how it works on ISP's side.

Well something is blocking port 80, and since you tested without the router with the same results, your "POE adapter" must be at fault.

This topic can now be closed, unresolved though. The ISP tech support had come to my place when I wasn't there and fixed the issue within minutes. As I've been told, they didn't do anything with the the hardware (adapter, cables, antenna, etc), so it will remain a big mystery. Thanks for the input, guys.
