Just like I described in the title. Is 3-Way SLI really worth it? Im planning on getting a 2-Way SLI configuration for my new pc using GTX 980 TI's. Im just wondering if It is worth the extra $600-$700. I'll be gaming in 4k or 1440p with GTA V, Crisis 3, Battlefield 4, and Starwars Battlefront III.

Solution
Easy answer is no. The 3rd card does not scale well. With that said, at higher resolutions it does start to help a bit. You also need to make sure your CPU wont become a bottleneck as its possible with 3 980tis. At 1440p 2 way will be more then enough. At 4k it gets interesting. Lookup jayztwocents on YouTube. He's running 3 Titan x cards and with some tweaking he managed to get the 3rd card to scale pretty well.

With 980 TIs not so much. Nvidia's SLI is pretty much capped @ 2 way cards for effective scaling.

The Fury X actually manages to scale pretty well up into Tri-Fire, then fails miserably at getting much gain at Quad-fire. The older 290X line did pretty well @ tri-fire too. The advantages of XDMA technology over using a bridge i suppose.

In any case, 2 way is sufficient with top of the line GPUs. I'm doing triple 1440p (7680x1440) smoothly off a single Fury X without any problems, and that's a third more demanding than 4k.
