i have an old XFX reference-design HD5870 card. i've read or at least come across short statements that one should not overclock an XFX card. true? any reason? or am i safe to simply install MSI Afterburner and push that sucka?

If you are willing to accept the risks involved with OCing, I'd say go for it, just watch your temps closely. If they go up a lot with minimal increase, maybe replace the GPU cooler with a better one and OC further. Reference coolers are usually not that great, so just be careful.

I believe xfx gpus have a limited lifetime warranty, and if that's the case, if the gpu fails during an OC, xfx has the right of refusal for refund/repair/replace so that would be my guess as to why ppl may not OC. Other than that, from my experience with XFX gpus, they are mediocre at best for OC and some cards have overheating issues.

well, i bought it used locally for $50 this past summer so i don't care much for the warranty aspect of it. but it sounds like the hardware might not be the best either, eh? what should the max temp be on that card when OCing, something like 90C?
