How do I know exactly what way my pc is not working properly?

Hi folks,

Bit of a strange one this...here goes.

At the start of the week, I got some more RAM for my computer, putting it up to 32gb from 16gb, and things were going fine for a couple of days. Then yesterday, I booted my machine up, and after about 30 minutes or so, it shut itself down, and I noticed a funny burning smell.

Initially thinking it was the PSU, I opened the case up and tried booting again, and noticed a small plume of smoke coming from the OS hard drive (I have 2 drives in the computer). So, I disconnected it, and tried booting again, and almost cause a fire as the SATA cable coming from the motherboard was touching the bottom of the case, needless to say everything was powered down immediately! The connection on the cable melted slightly by the looks of it as well, so that's out the window obviously.

So, trying to figure out what has caused this, I done some searching on here and started going through some procedures. Firstly, I disconnected all the drives and removed the flawed cable, and tried booting to see if I could get into the BIOS...and got nothing. At this stage, the computer was attempting to switch on, stayed on for about 5 seconds, then shut down, then tried to reboot itself, only to shut down again e.t.c. I removed the new ram modules I inserted and got the same issue. So then I removed the original 2 ram modules, and it began to stay on, but still no BIOS. I then decided to put in the 2 new ram modules I got back in, and got the same result.

Then I removed the 3rd party graphics card I use, and all of a sudden I get into my BIOS! So I tried rebooting with my OS hard drive, and the system doesn't seem to recognize it being connected, only giving me the option to boot from a USB multicard reader.

The only beep I'm getting throughout this whole process as well is when I have the OS hard drive connected and it tries to boot.

This has me very stumped to say the least, as I'm really unsure if the problem is with the motherboard, the ram, the hard drive, or the graphics card (and what the hell actually caused this in the first place!)

Some more info on what I'm using :

Motherboard : - ASROCK B75 ProM-3
Original RAM : DDR3 1333MHZ 8GB x2
New RAM : DDR3 1600MHZ 8GB x2
Graphics Card : Sapphire Radeon HD5450 1GB
Hard Drives : 2x Seagate Barracuda Green 1TB

Only realized after all this commotion happened the difference in the MHZ in the RAM modules, although from reading on here this shouldn't be much of an issue?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated, before I end up taking a 2x4 to the lot lol :)

Morning,

Yeah, if the PSU had died you would have heard either a bang or would have seen smoke coming out the back. Seems pretty scary at first knowing that you almost had a fire! Glad you are ok however.

With regards to your HDD not booting etc, if it almost caught on fire and had smoke coming out then it's gone, it's dead or is dying and I wouldn't recommend that you use it unless you are trying to kill yourself (which i'm sure you're not) I do provide suicide support but yeah that is out of context...

The memory modules, shouldn't have been a problem. The motherboard under clocks the memory and voltages to suitable levels so that the motherboard can be compatible with the memory (pretty smart), good motherboard, my best friend. :p

It's most likely just a HDD failure, would suggest that you get a new HDD or SSD and re-install windows and see how it pars. It would be great to my investigation if you could provide some snaps shots of the different pages on your BIOS, this would be very beneficial.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I very nearly sharted myself when it happened to be honest! Freaky times.

Yeah I'd sorta guessed the hard drive was buggered at least anyway, is there anyway to salvage what's on it then? I seen a video a while ago of some guy replacing the pcb on a drive with a similar problem, and he was able to retrieve the data from it to put onto another drive then? (Fortunately, I already bought a hybrid hard drive last week which I'm waiting to be delivered, it's almost as if the pc knew it was getting all these fancy new things and decided to take a fit? Who knows lol.)

Anyway, what do you think about the graphics card problem then? I'm only getting into the bios with it removed, so maybe this means there's more problems underlying somewhere?

Here's a couple of shots of the bios :

Thanks again :)

Hi again,

Hummm, Wait till your hybrid drive arrives and install windows and everything. Your GPU should be recognized then (hopefully). If not then post back here and I will help you.

By the way, everything in your BIOS seems correct.
