Hi can someone please help a member on Pcworld.com Antonio expressed to do this I've done what he suggested copied practically all my OS C drive to external passport ultra, had a few issue's. One being it's put shortcuts to all my files/folders on desktop and won't let me delete then as not got the ultra plugged in, no biggie really. So what do I delete or should I say don't delete, someone said everything except Windows and Program files? But if you can see image added got two program files and someone else said don't delete your User file as even though its on the ultra PC won't know as it's not connected, also underneath the C/drive says back up/restore about 18gb could that be showing in the cloning an am I safe to delete it or move it to the Ultra? as I'm using the clone software that comes with SanDisk 240gb SSD it gives me option omit docs, pictures, music, Video, but still to big so won't go no further? I basically want windows 10 and my games on SSD but I'm wondering if take it back pay more money for 480gb

Thanks Em J

If you dragged and dropped your C drive over to a new drive you might have created system links instead of actaully copying over the files (aka all those shortcuts you're seeing). A successful clone will not create anything like that.

As well as telling us what USAFRet suggested, could you please walk us through exactly what steps you performed?

Nothing is messed up! I'm asking what is safe to delete from my C/Drive and what isn't from my C drive even though I've copied it all to my external, being 1tb and new SSD being 240gb already explained when I try and clone says too big so won't go any further with the clone I want the SSD to have my windows and games and keep my hdd drive for docs, ect.. But so many people have different way's? As Antonio suggested backup/copy and then delete everything but Windows and Programs as User is already deducted? But is it as says my C/Drive is 220gb as just deleted 8gb so how is it not fitting on the SSD? Haven't tried again since deleted such, will later.. its a Pavilion P6 desktop

On the cloning procedure:
The target drive, the SSD, must be larger than the total used space on the source drive.
So then you run whatever cloning tool you use.
Then we have the OS and everything else on the new SSD.
Verify it boots.

Is this what you did?

Then you can wipe out everything on the old drive, and use it however you wish.

I'm unsure of where the external drive comes into this.

And depending on what software you're using, 22GB of source data is still too large for a 240GB drive.
For instance, the Samsung Data migration won't do it if the source data is larger than 200GB for a 250GB drive.
Other tools will do it, but it is NOT recommended because an SSD needs some free space (10-15%) for TRIM to do its thing. If you fill it up from the start, that won't work properly.

Hi this is what Antonio said
2v32e53.jpg
As already said I haven't done anything as won't move on, I've even deleted all my OneDrive and cancelled sync make more room but no still not enough room
260gc4z.jpg
so I thought right sod it as its all I hope backed up and copied externally I'll delete program's but won't let me says in use obviously with EZ GiG its meant to be available to use once how many more times' can I abort and start again before it tells me No or does it have to be fully used before that comes in play? I've done disk clean up it said I could free up 18gb but it had only ticked so many boxes god knows what was in my recycle bin be so big probably all my OneDrive files :-\ but its all online and I can still access all through my phone or tablet after clean up

as can see still not enough room. I know the biggest folder is my programX86 Steam but I really don't want delete that incase I lose all my games progress. Please any ideas or do I need take it back and buy 480gb. At my wits end and haven't even got to the serious bits

Bottom line, you need to get the current total used space to below 200GB or so.

What is actually taking up your drive space? WinDirStat may help show you this.

Copy your Music/Docs/Video to elsewhere.
Uninstall some applications.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

USAFRet isn't that defeating the object when I want my Steam games to run from SSD or can I add the main one's later? so I've downloaded that WinDirStat what exactly is it meant to do? I don't understand it's point except take up more room and show me obnoxiously pretty colours...

You have a space issue. Your total space, including the Steam games, is too large to clone to the SSD.
You can't run the Steam games until after you get the whole system on the SSD. After, you can have some games on the SSD, some on the HDD.
