Can Linux and Windows Co-exist on the Same Machine?

Hello,

I've recently been thinking about installing Linux on my Windows machine because I'd like to have a more flexible OS than Mac or Win, seeing as I want to delve into the illustrious world of computer science. However, I don't want to lose my Windows 10 installation in the process. Is there any way for Windows 10 and Linux to co-exist on the same machine?

Thanks,

Yes there are a couple different ways to achieve this. It is called "dual booting".

You can setup dual boots and go through all that, which is a bit of a pain and if you muck up the Linux, it may not boot.

Easier way, look into installing a virtual machine. This lets you run Linux in a virtual setup from within Windows. Since you just want to play around, you don't need anything that has the full power of linux running on its own, just use a VM.

Oracle VirtualBox is free, and you can basically install a full linux in it.

Even better, you can save "states" or copies of the virtual machine, so get your linux installed and save a state of it. you mess something up, revert back to the state you saved.

This is best way to get into linux if you just want to play.

Sure. I've done it in multiple ways.
Either dual boot....each OS living in its own partition, or running one or the other as a VM.

Currently, I find running Linux in a VM as much, much easier. I use VirtualBox.
There were some initial issues with VirtualBox and Win 10, but supposedly they have that worked out. This is/was the main reason my main box is not yet Win 10.

Dual boot? Sure. How you install them depends on how you want to access them.
