Hi!, I never done that and I have to spend all money I have for a workstation so I am a little scared and I am kindly ask for your guidance :)
I have 5k$. These are huge money for me and I need it to be perfect :) I am working with Creative Clouds and Autodesk programs, Zbrush and rendering softwares. First of all- 3D, but also making movies and design.

If I had to determine the characteristics of my ideal workstation, it would be (in this order):
1 Stability
2 The possibility of further expansion
3 Performance

After hours of reading, I would like to go for a workstation based on 2 xeon processors.

When it comes to motherboard - I would like it to be the most "future-oriented" - the point is that I want for example after 5 years sell my Xeons and invest in better ones, without changing all the equipment. So the motherboard is for me the most important part. I am thinking about Supermicro - there are models where you can expand ram to unimaginable magnitude.
However, I am a complete noob so I could be wrong.

As for the graphics card - I know that I should aim for quadro, however, all these articles that showes advatage over other cards is not enough to convince me to go for it. Maybe you can? :)
I also heard about "tesla" ones but did not find too much information (at least not those that I understand) that would explain to me what they are better.

When it comes to cooling, power supply, memory, case - I have no idea. I am rellying on you guys :)

Best wishes,

Paulina

It is UNLIKELY that you will be able to buy Xeon CPUs today, use them for 5 years and replace them with significantly better ones without changing motherboards. Technology will have moved on and the Xeons sold in 5 years won't be compatible with your old motherboard.
Go to the Intel ARK and look at 5 year old Xeons and current ones -- Not the same platform...

Supermicro is an obvious choice, but it is hard to go wrong with a genuine Intel server motherboard. Especially if stability is your primary focus.

Tesla isn't really a graphics card, it is a compute co-processor. Not what you are looking for.

What is your CURRENT config so that we can get a better idea of where to start ...

Thanks for reply.

I know about generations of cpu, but I thougt that I can buy today 2 very good, but not the best, and later when they gonna be cheaper- replace them.
So you do not recomend me going for supermicro?
I am not stubborn about specific parts, because I have poor knowlage what is the best and I heard meny divergent opinions. So I want a fresh start with my own topic :)

Could you suggest something?

Thanks!

If you can't find an Intel motherboard, then Supermicro is second choice.
In five years, you might be buying used CPUs. Intel might not be selling new.

I also think that if you are using a workstation to make money, it is worth buying an HP or Dell so that they will fix it for you the next day.
