Hi,

I have a lenovo y50 laptop that comes preinstalled with windows 8. The laptop has a 1 TB hard disk that I decided to replace with a SSD. I then installed windows 7 on the SSD and the SSD became the internal storage and the 1TB hard disk became an external storage connected through the USB.

I use legacy boot to boot windows 7 from the SDD and it works great.
My problem is I can't boot windows 8 from the 1TB when it's connected as external storage through USB. I had used UEFI boot and tried also to disable secure boot but had no success.
I always get an automatic repair window, However windows 8 boot correctly if I connected the 1TB as an internal storage with the same BIOS setup (UEFI boot and Enabled Secureboot)

Any ideas how I can boot the preinstalled windows 8 from a hard disk that is connected as an external storage?

Thank you.

I already told you, you CANNOT do it with your license. You would need an enterprise license to do that. Stop asking because the answer won't change.

One more time now ;) You cannot do that with your device as it is, and you will have to buy the necessary licenses to do so (and reinstall)

If you want to run the Windows system installed on the HDD you need to install the HDD inside your computer. Or you could just install WIndows 8 on your SSD and be happy you did.

You will need to buy a Windows 8.1 Enterprise license. In other words, it's not possible for you.

You should just reinstall Windows 8.1 on the SSD, and if you want to upgrade it to Windows 10. Both are MUCH faster and MUCH better at battery life management than Windows 7 for hardware that originally used 8+.

Are you sure from that? Because all what I ask to do is run the 1TB, which came with the laptop with windows 8 preinstalled, externally through USB and boot the preinstalled windows 8 from it. I'm still using the same laptop ( same BIOS ), so why this is not applicable?

Thank you.

What you want to do requires WindowsToGo that's only available for enterprise licenses. You cannot do what you want to do legally (and therefore the answer on this forum is no). Do not ask for help with trying to illegally install it.

Illegal! I'm not installing windows 8, it's preinstalled and it's used with the same laptop it's licensed to through the same hard drive it came preinstalled in.

Why that became something illegal?!

Thanks.
