Hey,

I'm going to be upgrading to an i5-6600K processor with an Asus Maximus VIII Hero motherboard this Christmas, (I've checked that they're compatible) but I've hit a problem. I'm not sure what RAM to get. Honestly, I don't really understand it, even after researching. My problem is that the new Skylake processors work best with DDR4 Memory, on the Intel page for the CPU listed above, it says that the supported memory types are: DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V. The part that I'm confused with is the "1866/2133" bit, I know it's the speed but I just need some help deciding what RAM to get for this upgrade and how it will work with the parts I've stated. Thanks for the help.

Solution

The i5 6600k can support up to 2133Mhz ram frequencies.

Thanks Gate9er and Sapphire Thunder for the replies, I'll look into which RAM to buy, one small question: What RAM manufacturers do you suggest?

So it's more about the MB limitations rather than the CPU, even though the specs for the Hero say max 3733, the CPU will handle it?

Pretty much so. Of course, cpu adds SOME limitations. Which is why I said 2800 as example. It would be good middle ground.

Corsair (Vengeance), G. Skill (Ripjaws) and Kingston (Hyper X) are possibly the top ones. Corsair being my favourite.
