Hi i'm looking to upgrade my ram because i've noticed that games are starting to have 6GB ram as the minimum. My old Alienware uses Triple channel and the ram crucial suggested was 2x4GB(8GB) dual channel. I've done some seaching but wanted a clearer answer on whether the upgrade will do me any good and if it will work.

I want to go from 3 x 2GB (i believe 1066mhz)

I'm looking to get this ram which crucial says is compatible.

My motherboard is a X58 and the cap for 1600mhz is 12GB, when I look at the manual that came with the pc is states that for 1600 mhz I should use slots 1,3 and 5.

Just wondered if I could just use slots 1 and 3 and everything would be fine.

Solution
You are right on your motherboard, you should install memory in 3 slots, not 2 for maximum performance. They need to be a matched set if at all possible.

So I should order 12GBs of Ram to use all three slots instead of just using two?

So I cant order the one I linked above and then order the single 4GB version that is the same?

I got the ram anyway as im going to be building a pc in the near future and i can just carry the ram over. I put it in this morning and CPUZ is showing that it is running in triple channel. I'm just wondering if there is anyway to test how stable it is?
