hi
i have upgraded to windows 10 a while ago and just recently i noticed tha t my dvd drive gone.cant see in bios or disk manager or device manager.when i load a disc you can hear spinning then thats it.also no problem ejecting it.tried all the fixes ive found on the net,but no luck.gave remote controll to microsoft helpdesk but nothing.tried all the dell helptools without any luck.tried deleting registry etc.nothing.in Bios my sata Odd not detected.in device manager i didnt even have dvd drive till i downloaded daemon tool .now i have dvd drive with a virtual drive in it but when i search for hardware changes wont find anything.so iam stuck atm.maybe my only option is an external drive?warranty expired 2 months ago so that is a no go.unfortunatelly iam over my 1month with w10 so i cant go back to 8.1 unless i reinstall everything but have about 1.2 tb worth of games and movies on this laptop so thats not an easy option.just wondering if someone have any other fix for my problem that i can try.

Hi

With most Dell laptops there is only a single screw holding DVD drive in place

Read Dell service/repair manual for your laptop for details of screw location

with battery removed, remove screw and then dvd drive
then re place drive, screw & battery again.

If it now appears in BIOS & Device Manager this was a bad connection.

If DVD does not appear again it is a dead DVD drive and nothing to do with the Windows 10 upgrade

Win 10 can not make DVD drive disapear from BIOS/UEFI and Dell F12 Boot Menu

Thank you for your answer Basroil.
You might be right and the drive is broken, but cant recall anything that would of brake it .,also the usage cant be a problem as the laptop is 14 months old and only used it for installing games, and never for watching dvds.might pull the back off and see if its a cord. dvd player is only a slot on the outside but its loading the disc in and spin it and also eject it.

Watching dvds does (very, very slowly) damage drives , and even more so if they are laptop drives. Probably just bad luck though.

I would definitely double check the connections and bios settings before doing anything drastic though.

Thanks for all the answers.ended up pulling backpanel off and just made sure the dvd drive connection is pushed in properly.its all fixed no.never tought that easy to pull a backpanel off the alienware panel.

They were made for easy fixing. You can take apart my old XPS12 with half a dozen screws, replace everything, and then close it back up in less than an hour, without having ever done it before.
