High ping in online games

High ping in online games

Hi all, I just built a new Pc and I have a weird problem. I get very high ping in onlines games (100ms-250ms) every time. This makes gaming almost unplayable.
My internet works fine when browsing internet and doing small things. My ping goes up only when I try to play online games.
I use wifi connection btw. When I use my laptop also with wifi connection I have no problem with latency (40ms-60ms) in games. So this high latency problem occurs only with this computer.
I have updated all my drivers etc, tried to disable my antivirus softwares without any help.

Here is some specs about my computer:

Intel Core i5 4690K
Asus Z97-pro
Geforce 960
Seagate Barracuda 1 TB
Kingston HyperX FURY Black 8 GB
Corsair VS650, 80 PLUS White

Any advices what to do? I will post more information if it helps.

Afternoon,

On the game specifically, what server are you connecting to (the location of the server would be helpful) and where you are (country, state etc).

Also, see if you can run the OS in safe mode with networking and then run the game and see if you have ping issues still. There could be something hidden on your computer eating all of your bandwidth up causing you to get high ping.

Your first test should be to try it with a ethernet cable connected to your router. This will quickly show if it is actually the wireless or if it is something else in the machine. Games you see strange stuff that affect the in game ping times that are not actually network issues.

The most common issue with a desktop machine and wireless are the case blocking the signal because of poor antenna placement. Laptops have the antenna in a optimum location generally behind or on the sides of the screen.

I'm from Finland and servers that I have been tested are from Sweden, Germany and Norway. I get always same high latency no matter the server locations.
And I was unable to start any games in safe mode.

Hi again,

Could be some interference in your area causing you to get bad ping connections, have you asked your ISP for some advice, if not then give them a call.

Also, try connecting to the servers at different times of the day and see if that has any effect, such as running the game in the morning, afternoon and evening and then recording what Ping you are getting.
