I received the picture of a document. I needed it in .pdf format but it was too large... I used "open with" and chose "Paint" to resize, and saved as .jpeg -the best option i could think of out of the available ones. After that, all the docs in my computer changed from .pdf format to jpeg... I did restore the system and I have everything back, but how can avoid that? How can I avoid this? Can I resize/save as/etc a document without having that change apply to all the documents in the computer?
Thank you

You are doing things wrong, you don't mess with what the file opens with, you need to convert the file. You can open it in another program if it works to open and work with that file, but don't select "open all files of this type with this program" option.

When you get a file, you need to find out what program is used to work with that file, then use the options in that file to save it in another format or compress images more or whatever you need to.
