hi, i am planning on making a build with the fractal design define r5. i am planning on adding the Fractal Design silent series 140mm to the build as well however i was wondering are the default fans good enough to run in a gaming pc? and are they loud? do you guys have a recommendation for any other fans if the silent series fan isn't good. thanks.

I have never heard the Fractal brought up when the topic of conservation is "best PC fans". That being said, I don't see many folks asking what to replace them with either indicating that most owners aren't complaining.

Here's silentpcreview's top 24

i would rather a red/black colour fan and 140mm but if you are talking about the case it is black and the silent series fan is white
here is the store i would like to get the parts from

We have been using the Phanteks cases in the majority of builds in the last 2 years which has meant that we don't do a lot of fan swapping since their fans sit a top the charts. Builds where we would have used the R5, we now use the Enthoo Pro (you can compare them here

Assuming you go with the R5, I would add some fans as this is one of the noted weaknesses of the R5

If there is anything to complain about with the Define R5, it would have to be the stock airflow. While it did give us near average results on our CPU and GPU, the chassis is in definite need of more airflow for a gamer or heavy user to be happy in the long term. To sort of counteract that though, this model is intended to have users go all out, as the chassis is designed to handle it, and the stock fans may not even stay in the build at all.

I would start out however with the stock setup on the R5 and see how your temps run. Without knowing what's going in there, it's hard to judge just how much cooling you need. After checking on newegg, I also see that the Phanteks fans (PH-140SP) are $20. I have never seen them previously above $15 and often they are 20% off ($12) or $5 off ($10). So waiting till you get a sense of just how much extra is needed would be a wise choice as you will have abetetr idea of what's needed and by then prices should return to normal.

My PC, in a Fractal R5, is on it's way to me now. It should arrive Thursday, next week.
My understanding is that, the two fans provided are not that great, So I've been wondering what to do.
I have two Noctua NF-P12 (3 pin), and two Akasa Apache (4 pin), in my spares box.
My thought is, that if I remove the Fractal fan at the front, I can then put the two Akasa Apache fans in as high pressure intakes.
This would force cool air through the HDD caddy, and into the body of the case.
If I block the mesh beside the rear of the GPU removable ports, with some foam, also block the central fan mount in the base, will I achieve "positive pressure"
Another, additional intake, could be floor mounted, blowing air upwards. So cool air, comes in the back, through the drives, it is then met by an even colder stream, blowing upwards from the bottom ounted Noctua.

What do people think, will it work?
Should I keep it simple, use the two Apaches in the front, leave the exhaust Fractal fan as it is? Or go with another intake at the bottom>
