My DVI cable does not work by itself when connected to my monitor but If i plug a HDMI cable in addition the the DVI cable to my monitor it works - It used to work (DVI) by itself but not just the DVI cable does not work. Is this a problem with the DVI cable?

I would use just the HDMI cable but that does not work either by itself

Very weird issue... So your monitor only responds when you have both a DVI and HDMI cable plugged in?

Does your machine have a video card installed?
If so, Do the dvi cable and hdmi cable run off the mobo or off the vid card?
What is the make / model of your machine.

Yep that is right, is it meant to work if I only have a HDMI cable plugged in?
Yes my PC has a video card installed.
Not sure what you mean by mobo, here are some of my specs

Machine name: WIN81-64
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 10240) (10240.th1.150916-2039)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: B85M-D3H
BIOS: BIOS Date: 06/19/14 22:58:42 Ver: 04.06.05
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 8088MB RAM
Page File: 5538MB used, 3829MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: 12

I'm really confused maybe I'm doing something wrong, but as I said i have little to no experience with PC's as I just use them, I don't know much about them except the basics

From the specs you posted I don't think there is a stand alone video card in your system. Unless you've installed one yourself.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4567#ov

This is your mobo (motherboard) If you look at the pictures you can see there is a VGA, DVI, and HDMI port installed directly to the motherboard it's self.
No it is not intended to work only with HDMI, or Only with DVI plugged in. You certainly should not need to have both plugged in. Either or should work just fine. If you have a video card installed please let us know the make/model.

First thing I would try. 1) Plug in ONLY the hdmi cable, do a full reboot, Press and hold the power button if you have to until the machine turns off. Turn it back on again. If this does not work then make sure your drivers are up to date.

Did you install windows 10? Or did it come with it pre installed. Im assuming since you said you only know the basics that it was pre installed.

I tried the HDMI cable, there is sound (using an external speaker plugged into my razer keyboard) and everything but it says no signal, but I can manually use spotify controlled from my phone so it is definitely working. There just isn't a picture showing.

I installed windows 10 by myself, and this was when it first came out and I only had the DVI cable plugged in and worked perfectly. I've updated all of my drivers using Driver Booster 3.

Also, my PC case has a small opening (for the fan I'm assuming). I can see a GTX 960 video card inside but with dxdiag, I can't find it. It shows up as Intel(R) HD Graphics Family. Maybe it is a hardware problem?

I doubt it's a hardware issue. It's either a driver and or windows 10 driver issue. Ive seen a lot of issues with windows 10 and display drivers. With that being said.

The Intel(R) HD Graphics is your mobo graphics, you need to make sure that your plugged into the proper ports. You aren't going to be able to use Onboard graphics AND the graphics card at the same time. With windows 10 im unfamiliar if you need to get into bios settings and point to what graphics you want to use. Hopefully someone else will pop in and give some advice.

For the time being what I would do is open your case up and take out your graphics card. (While the machine is off and unplugged, make sure you stay grounded as well.) Plug either your hdmi, or dvi into the onboard graphics port connected directly to the motherboard. Boot the machine up and see how the display behaves. If it works.. Then you know it's an issue with the graphics card / graphics card driver specifically and it will narrow down what we are looking for.

Hello, I know this is reply is very late but I got someone to come over and he fixed it for me, it looked like i was using my on board graphics card instead of the installed one, which he told me about in more detail. Thanks for the help though!
