I am looking to buy an EVGA Nvidia GTX 970 ( http://goo.gl/G1LBI4 ) but I don't know if it will work on my system, the specifications are here:

CPU: Intel i3 4160 @ 3.6Ghz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3
PSU: FSP500-60HHN
OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1

Thanks in advance.

Ok, thanks for your response, what about the MSI AMD R9 380 ( http://goo.gl/SkOPiZ )

That would be less of a bottleneck than a 970 but you'll still need a new PSU.

Is the 950 the best i can do at the moment then?

Well there is quite a few:
Grand Theft Auto 5
DayZ Standalone
Counter Strike: Global Offensive

And when they come out I'll also be playing:
Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3
Rainbow Six Siege
Star Wars Battlefront

So really I need the best GPU I can get.

The GTX 970 will benefit in these games, if you turn the settings up, but your 'lowest fps' may still drop under 60 at times in games like BF4. You could always upgrade the CPU later if needed. Don't forget a decent quality PSU, are you okay to choose one?

If you could help me pick a PSU that would be great. But, if I can't upgrade my PSU what GPU do you recommend and could you give me a link to it if that is ok?

Here is a tier 1 PSU that is of good quality and is powerful enough for your system: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-evga-supernova-g2-psu-fully-modular-80plus-gold-atx-sli-crossfire-ready.

If you would prefer to get a higher wattage in case of future upgrades, the 650w version is here: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-evga-supernova-g2-fully-modular-80plus-gold-atx-power-supply-541a-single-plus12v-rail-140mm-dou

It's hard to say what the best GPU would be to use on that PSU as I don't know it's true quality, but something like the GTX 960 may be pushing it.

While that power supply should be enough to power your system in total, it's not a very good idea to use a general, everyday use power supply. The one you're looking at is not meant for high end power consumption processes, such as a high end graphics card. You'll want to buy a stronger, more versatile power supply just to be on the safe side.

I would personally recommend - from my own experiences - a power supply made by Corsair, Coolermaster or EVGA.

May I suggest:
EVGA 220-G2-0550-Y1 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438053
CORSAIR CSM Series CS550M 550W - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139059
Cooler Master V550 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171092

Sorry but one last question, which GTX 960 do you recommend that I buy?

Any will do, I usually choose the cheapest one, I wouldn't go for a reference (Single fan) one again though.
I would say the Palit one because it's one of the cheapest ones that has a full sized cooler on it, I own one (GTX 980 version) and they run pretty cool, I get temps of around only 60c with my fan on a constant 45%. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-030-PL
Any of them will do, but I'd recommend one with at least two fans.
