So MMO's are typically CPU load heavy. When you add Ultra graphics in 4K it becomes GPU and CPU heavy. Even World of Warcraft will drop a 5930k CPU and a 980ti below 20fps when your in 30 man mythic raids. My question is this. Since wow particularly uses only a couple cores of a CPU, would the Devils Canyon i7 4.0Ghz quad core be a better option than than the 5930k 3.5Ghz in terms of maximizing the FPS since its base clock is .5 Ghz higher giving me a higher OC cap per core? More cores help my GPU run 4 k, but better cores reduce FPS drop when in populated battles in 4K. So I'm fully aware that wow is an old poorly coded game that will choke no matter how much money you dump into a rig.. But despite that fact, what is the sweet spot in terms of builds to maximize the FPS in 4K wow?

CPU math:
Getting a faster CPU (or overclocking) of the same architecture can at BEST increase frame rates close to the overclock.

For example:
CPU overclocked from 4GHz to 4.4GHz (10%)

Game FPS might increase from 30FPS to 33FPS at best.

If you had the 5930K already I definitely wouldn't get a different CPU. Once you overclock it I'm guessing you might get about 300Hz difference vs an i7-4790K clocked to the max.

Thus probably no more than a 5% real game difference.

I'd go with a 4790k, it'll handle 4k on WoW really well. If you have the money, you could opt for a 6700k. A 970 will handle 4k on WoW but not much else, if you go with a 980 you can go 4k on other games too.
