radeon hd 6970 vs geforce gtx 550 ti

I'm looking to get new pcie x16 2.0 video card which one will give me better gaming this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162079 or this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202113 also im not sure if I can out a 2.1 or 3.0 card into my 2.0 slot

  1. The 6970 is significantly better than the 550 Ti. But yes you could use a PCI-E 3.0 card in a 2.0 slot, you should only see a very small performance loss vs a 3.0 slot.

    like what would I lose if I used a 3.0 in my 2.0 wise as neither of these will play the witcher 3 only a newer card will

    Instead of getting older card like 6970 and 550ti better for you to get something like 750ti. About as fast as 6970 but consume much less than 75w unlike 6970 which is rated at 250w. With your budget maybe you can extend your choice up to R7 370. If you can find 270X that is even better.

    but aren't those 2.1 and 3.0 how do those work putting them into a 2.0 slot
  8. worry not. PCI-E have backward compatibility. PCI-E 2.1 only have some trouble with PCI-E version 1.x (but still fixable via BIOS updates).
