PCIe SSD Compatability Question

Hello everyone, I'm currently constructing an economic performance rig structured around an EVGA 170-BL-E762-A1 LGA 1366 Intel ATX Motherboard with two Intel Xeon 5650 processors.

I need to know if it's possible to use a compatible PCIe SSD with a M.2 to PCIE adapter on a motherboard like this to boot windows.

This is the adapter I will be using:

Check the boot devices menu in the BIOS. If it doesn't include PCIe (and I'd be surprised if it did), you can't boot from it, regardless of what type of adapter is used.

Furthermore, you wouldn't be able to install Windows on it anyway unless Windows Setup recognised it as a bootable drive in such a configuration.

Serious? I really want to use the dual xeon 5650 processors, they are dirt cheap ($100 a pop on amazon) and score really high on benchmarks relative to it's price.

I don't have the motherboard yet to check if it supports PCIe boot devices, but this is bogus! Is there any dual 1366 motherboard that would support a PCIe SSD?
 
I am afraid I have some bad news for you.

The EVGA motherboard you mentioned is an older X58 board that that was released in 2009. That's before the introduction of modern third generation solid state drives. It does not properly support modern ssd's. Support is limited to older SATA 2 3Gb/s ssd's. However, standard 2.5 inch, SATA 3 6Gb/s ssd's are backward compatible and will work but performance will be restricted to SATA 2 3Gb/s levels.

For proper support of modern M.2 and PCIe solid state drives a user would have to have a Z87, Z97, Z107, or X99 motherboard.

Thanks for the replies bros. Let me get this straight. What you're telling me is if I tried to use the adapter to connect the PCIe SSD to the X58 board I'll still be able to boot but can't exceed SATA 2 speeds?

Isn't that still a good idea since the SSD (SM951) at maximum has a Sequential Read & Write of 2,150MB/s & 1,200MB/s. It's not exceeding the 3Gb/s level in either category.

Apologize for the drawn out question, just so confused and don't want to buy everything and have a problematic rig.
