I have recently bought a asus rt n66u router without realizing it wasnt a modem/router (rookie mistake), I have just moved into my new apartment and my ISP say my connection is ready to go, i connect the router by Ethernet from the port in the wall into the connection on the router and no internet connection. Is the because i need to purchase a modem to go with the router??

If so can I hear some sugeestions as i cannot seem to find any online, thanks.

As noted, call the ISP. I would try and rule out your router if it is a separate unit first if you don't want to call them. Could be failing as well.

If it's not that, it's either the modem or your physical connection to the cable plant. Both of which only your ISP can deal with (assuming you're "renting" the modem like most ISPs)

You have an RJ45 (cat5/6) jack in your wall that you plugged directly into the router? If the place is wired up that way, you probably don't need a modem because there is usually already one providing data to that wall jack if you already have an ISP account. Have you tried just plugging the wall cable directly into your PC network jack? You may just need to plug the RJ45 from the wall into a SWITCH port on your router, and then your PC or other devices into the other switch ports, and don't use the router/"internet" port.
