Does my super slow CPU a bottleneck for my GPU to perform in terms of FPS?

Hello, first of all I just wanna say that I just joined this forum so I hope to solve my problems and confusions here :)

I have AMD Athlon 64 x2 5000+ with GTX 260 extreme+ edition (I know it's old hardware but I'm looking for an upgrade soon). I've seen benchmarks of people playing battlefield 4 with this GPU (not too bad on lower settings, considering that this GPU is from 2008). I played other games like Crysis 2 on the lowest settings and it runs pretty well but there's some random fps drops here and there, although the average fps is like 30. I was wondering, compared to the benchmarks I've seen for this GPU, is it that my CPU the bottleneck for my performance, even in games like Crysis 2?

Now I know that Crysis 2 is pretty demanding but I felt like I could squeeze more fps from the GPU. Thx a bunch and if I made any false statements in the text then pls correct me :)

While the other guy is right, you are in dire need of upgrading, he hasn't answered your question. As such, let me kindly fill in. I personally don't know if your CPU is a bottleneck with that GPU, but I can show you how to find out.

Download MSI Afterburner. This will also install...

Nothing will bottleneck here, this is just a lack of new equipment.
I suggest you upgrade both your cpu and gpu.
It doesn't have to be great, a AMD fx-6300 and a gtx 950/960 will be an huge step forward.
At 1080p BF4 will run on 60 fps on high settings.
And you will be able to get along a few years.

Hey man thx for answering, I just need to know whether its a bottleneck. Im planning on upgrading to an i5 CPU and R9 280, so yeah :)

Ahh ok, well its not ;)
A 280 sounds nice, if you can affort it, a 280x will be the beast for you, goodluck!

Download MSI Afterburner. This will also install RivaTuner, but don't worry, you need both. Open MSI Afterburber and go to Settings, then naviate to the Monitoring tab. In here you can choose which elements you wish to monitor. The ones relevant to you are going to be FPS, GPU usage and CPU usage. Clicking on them will give you an option to show it in the On-Screen Display. Make sure you select that tickbox for all the attributes you want to monitor and open up Rivatuner. From here it's just a simple case of moving the "Show on-screen display" from off to on. You can also do things like configure the text size, position and colour to make it a little bit more visiable. Screenshot below to help you find these things: http://imgur.com/q9g8Ngm

If you haven't got a CPU bottleneck it's normal for your GPU to have a really high utilisation (make sure V-sync is turned off to monitor this correctly) - around 90% or more is normal. In this scenario your CPU utilisation wouldn't be anything too high.

In the event you have a CPU bottleneck, it should look like the opposite to the above whereby your GPU isn't being utilised much as it's being held back by your CPU. Utilisation for GPU would be around 60% or less and CPU utilisation would be pretty high going into the 90's.
