hey guys. I've been looking into buying a new gpu lately, and I've been wondering how much memory I actually need.. I only use on one monitor and I plan on playing games like battlefield 4 and such. can you help?

Solution

you kind of can get by with 1GB's but its not recommended at all. a lot of GPU's getting in to the low 100's these days offer 2GB's of RAM. like the GTX 750Ti and Radeon R7250
If you wanted to ensure you could run games for several years to come I would recommend looking at 4GB or VRAM for a graphics card.

You can certainly play current games with 2, but as games continue to get more and more complex you will be best served in the long run if you can afford to get 4GB.

intended only as a generalization. i can run 10 year old games well over 4GB's of VRAM... a good point to make non the less.

glamdringfh's right though. if you can afford a card with 4GB's, you will be better served in the long run.

My advice:
Buy the best graphics card your budget will allow.
You will get fair value at every price point.

Do not worry about the vram.
Cards are designed with an appropriate amount of vram.
Moreover, how vram is managed will differ between Nvidia and AMD drivers.

VRAM has become a marketing issue.
My understanding is that vram is more of a performance issue than a functional issue.
A game needs to have most of the data in vram that it uses most of the time.
Somewhat like real ram.
If a game needs something not in vram, it needs to get it across the pcie boundary
hopefully from real ram and hopefully not from a hard drive.
It is not informative to know to what level the available vram is filled.
Possibly much of what is there is not needed.
What is not known is the rate of vram exchange.
Vram is managed by the Graphics card driver, so there may be differences in effectiveness between amd and nvidia cards.
Here is an older performance test comparing 2gb with 4gb vram.

Spoiler... not a significant difference.
