Xbox 360 original being slow...

I have an Xbox 360 original that I've had for a while now, and played lots of halo and stuff on it, and up until recently, it's been working fine, but a couple weeks ago, after not having used it for a couple months, it was SOOOO slow. I tried playing halo reach, halo 4, portal 2, and although they started up, it took about 2 hours for a halo 4 campaign mission to load. I tried doing things I saw online, clearing the cache, backing up the drive to a usb then formatting and putting stuff back on the drive, but nothing worked. At some point, after not having done anything special, it worked fine, taking about 5 minutes to load the same mission from before, but then when I turned it off, the next day it was slow again. I tried taking the hard drive off, and then magically, it worked super fast, which was fine to play firefights that I don't care about whether or not it saves my progress, but without a drive, I can't play with my profiles online, can't play destiny, can't use all of my save games, etc.
So basically I'm wondering if there is anything I should try to get it to work.
Thanks!

Maybe where did you get it? Gamestop or something? I would call them up tell them you think its failing and why, see what they say they might. Microsoft might have some kind of factory warranty on it so it wouldn't hurt calling them to see what they say, if I remember correctly the number is 1-800-4MY-XBOX. Yah I would just use your old hard drive and maybe a usb drive for extra storage until you can get a new one.

Sounds like your hard drive is dying, you can probably get a new one on ebay for ten bucks. As far as save games and what not just put it on a usb drive and transfer it to the new hard drive or you can buy the hard drive transfer cable for a couple bucks. Also you can use the cloud just put your important stuff in cloud storage and when you activate your account on the new hard drive it will still be in your accounts cloud.

The drive is actually new from probably around March. It's a 320gb one, because the on with the Xbox was only 8gb, do you think there is any way to return it or get a refund? If so, how would I prove that it's failing?
I guess for now I'll just use the old drive and only transfer important things

If it's new, should have a warranty. Generally you don't need to prove anything, they just take it. Although, try the 8 GB drive if you want to see if it hangs while loading.
New drives fail all the time, it's not unheard of.

I'd find the manufacture site and go through them. They should have support, Western Digital is pretty good for their returns.
