just want to consult this to you guys.
all will be bought brand new

i5 4460
any ATX board
any 2x4gb 1600mhz CL9 ram
single gtx 970

pros:
can reach my target fps easily
budget friendly

cons:
older platform
older support
hard to find a replacement part if it dies 2-3 years from now

vs

i5 6600k
asus z170 A white
HyperX 2x4GB 2400mhz white
single gtx 970 HOF white (plan to add another one but not until 2016)

pros:
can reach my target easily with 120fps++ (I think?)
new platform
future proof atleast 3 years

cons:
cash sucker (mobo+ram+proc+cpu cooler = $663)
what would you choose?

would just like this for gaming purposes bf ultra 60fps (yes I know i5 4460 + gtx 970 could achieve this easily) as I have my laptop for programming purposes.

Solution
Well i can tell you, then its not worth it.
I am a gamer, i know you probably want the stuff as fast as me.
The skylake build is better, ofcourse, but with the 4690k build you will be just fine for years.
If you include that 970 too. I have the 4690k its a fine cpu, i think i'll be settled for 3/4 years with it. Thats a long time.
So its your choice, skylake is better. If 4690k is 100% 6600k is 105%-110%MAX so you have to make a choice.
Hope this helps. Maybe PM me which one you'd get ;) Goodluck

IMHO skylake isn't needed for desktop unless you really want the new chipset features.
ddr4 isn't faster then ddr3 which some think is a selling point. the main advantage to skylake is for laptop and battery devices for the energy efficiency.

personally save your money for now.

For gaming performance, Skylake is only showing about a 5% performance increase over Haswell Refresh, which isn't enough to justify the additional cost at THIS time, in my opinion. For just about ALL other tasks and processes, Skylake is significantly faster. If this is going to be a gaming only machine, save the money and go with Haswell Refresh which has more than enough performance capability for any current gaming configuration.

which is better?

haswell no-overclock
second hand i5 4460 ($117) or bnew i5 4690 ($217)
bnew Asus h97 pro gamer ($127)
bnew 2x4gb ram ($55)

haswell overclock
bnew i5 4690k ($235)
bnew asrock z97 extreme4 ($154) or bnew z97s krait edition ($153)
bnew 2x4gb ram ($55)

skylake
bnew i5 6600k ($242)
bnew ASUS Z170 A ($206)
2x4gb ram cheapest ($68)

I indicated all the prices. so here it is. I'm from PH and prices are a little bit high.

Clearly the 6600k with the z170 A is a better configuration than either of the other two simply due to the motherboard choice. I'd avoid the Krait edition motherboard and the Extreme4 if it were my purchase.

The 4690k with a Gigabyte Gaming 5 or Z97-A would be a good setup as well.

Upgrading from 4460to6600k will not burst your game into 120++ FPS
With you second build, you might get 100FPS if your lucky (ultra 1080p)
I personally would go for the 4690k or even better the 6600k.
Its OC i prbably worth it and you will be settled for years.

final question. I got $800 just for mobo/proc/ram/cooler and video card.
what's my best bet?

If I were to purchase a skylake system I would wait until January next year to buy a GTX 970 (it's okay for me to wait until January)

or is this a smarter buy?

i5 4460 second hand is $117 or bnew is $178
B85 PRO GAMER $102
any 2x4gb 1600mhz CL9 ram $55
Palit gtx 970 jetstream $320
