Hi,

I recently changed my mobo and CPU because of frequent freezing and lag issues. This is my current PC Specs.

Mobo: Asus Z170k <---- (NEW)
CPU: i5-6600 (3.3Ghz) <---(NEW)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 2133MHz (2x4GB)
GC: Powercolor HD7850
PSU: Antec 900W
HDD: WD 500GB WD500AADS <--- Never changed
SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 120GB <---(NEW)
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

After setting up there were some issues such as unable to detect selected USB devices but it was resolved since I upgraded my Windows from 8.0 to 8.1.

But I realize the lag issues persist. It can be seen when I hover my mouse across the screen, and it is unable to capture what I type sometimes when I punch the keys due to the lag. With the assumption that since it is a new mobo and CPU, the prime suspect of the lag (and also in the previous PC) was the Sata HDD, which was the only component not changed since the time I bought it.

So to test it out, I shut down my PC, unplug my HDD, and power on again. But it was unable to start up because it was unable to detect my HDD. I plugged it back and tried to power it back on and it showed the same thing. So this time I restarted and went into bios. What I found strange is that it does not show my HDD under the "Boot Priority", but it showed my HDD under "Sata Information". And I was able to only start up my PC via "Boot Menu" where I select on my HDD from there.

To sum it up, I have 2 questions:
1) Is the lag issues simply due to the HDD or could it be from something else?
2) Why is it unable to detect my HDD in Boot Priority, but able to be found in "Sata Information"? How do I now make sure everything can work the way it should?

I would appreciate help from you guys as my knowledge on PC is very limited. Thanks!

Hello. Like me you went the wrong way upgrading/changing everything but the cuprit.
Your HDD is dead. It probably had bad health to be gin with when you started noticing issues. For me HD Sentinel showed 25% health and around 300 bad sectors on my hdd when I noticed my computer was freezing periodically, music lagged, keyboard input of combinations such as shift+del was acting with delay, some programs loaded slower than usual and there was buzzing noise comming from my speakers and the section where my HDD was.
To be sure you can try connect the HDD in different sata slot with another cable and see if it works. Sometimes you can make it work for a while when connected to usb. Might be enough to get your data secured. In case you load properly and HD Sentinel shows bad health - do not clone drive... just copy whatever you need to ext. source

Hi vesp3r,

Thanks for the response. I guess changing the parts did help me get rid of my freezing issue but not the lag. Since this is a new PC my HDD is reformatted and clean as a whistle. I did not put any files in it yet since I may have to change it if it is a HDD issue. I will troubleshoot it by the method you suggest. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue. I will try using HD Sentinel to see what is the result. Will keep you updated. Thanks man! Appreciate it :)

I ran the HD Sentinel and it showed my HDD is a 98% health. When I ran the short test however, it states that it is "Test Failed by Read Element". What is the issue?

hmmm the health isnt that bad but from what i see it has something to do with surface problems (weak/bad sectors)
You can try to open elevated (administrator rights) command prompt and type "sfc /scannow"
This should automatically detect and fix disk errors by locking the bad sectors so they cant be used. But your harddisk should be running w/o any big problems with that health status
