hi guys!

im planning on building a new rig and i want to make it in sli (my first dual gpu setup). i already have a zotac 980ti amp extreme which is a 3 slot gpu in my current setup.

is it ok to have a sli in 3 slot gpu? anyone who did this before? im concerned with the airflow for the 1st gpu since the 2nd gpu will be directly underneath it. is there any mobo that has more space between the two gpus? or should i just buy a pci extender? (not sure if the correct term)

selling my current gpu will be very difficult since im in a country where i dont know any other gamer.

thanks in advance...

Here is a picture of the motherboard that I have:

PCIEx16 slots are labeled PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 on this mobo. This gives 3 slot spacing in between the cards because you have a PCIEx1, PCIEx8 and PCIEx1 in between.

Based on your previous post, it appears that you will be going with the z170 chipset. An example board that has the correct spacing would be the ASRock OC Formula, MSI Z170A XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM, MSI 170A GAMING M9 ACK, Gigabyte Z170X...

So I have first hand experience. I have a pair of 980TI Amp Extremes in SLI. My original mobo had no spacing between the GPUs in SLI, and the top card ran 20 degrees hotter than the bottom gpu in a high airflow case (front, bottom and side fan intakes). I switched the mobo to one that allows one card spacing between the two GPUs (Gigabyte z97x Gaming GT), and it makes all the difference (the top card runs slightly higher). Look for a mobo that supports 4-way SLI because it usually has three card spacing between the two PCIx16 slots.

The yet to be released Asus Z170-WS will likely have the same type of spacing as well. Note all these boards are high-end boards, so they will be rather expensive.

dont do it, i had zotac 980ti amp extreme sli and temps are super high. i am selling one of my zotacs for this reason. Only if you have enough space in between and not sandwiched like mine,
