Corsair memory & Corsair cooler mis match? (H100iGTX & CMD16GX4M2 memory stick)

Hi Folks....

I seem to be having a compatibility problem with my build. I used the pcpartspicker web site to configure my build and it said everything is fine. So I might be doing something wrong.

I am using a Gigabyte GA-X99-SLI motherboard in a Thermaltke Urban S71 full tower case. My issue came up after I instilled a Corsair H100iGTX cooler. After the cooler install, I tried to install my memory - two sticks of Corsair CMD16GBX4M2B3000C15. But I do not have the headroom to install the memory because the Corsair cooler sits to low to the motherboard to install the memory. Even if I un install the Corsair cooler (fans) and plug the memory in, and then try to re install the cooler, the cooler sets too low to the motherboard.

I looked around to see if I could install the Corsair in another screw pattern to lift it up, but I could not find a solution.

I believe my Corsair memory has a heat sink on top of it. I suspect I can remove that and then I can use the memory? I do not know if that is safe to do or not.

I went back to pcpartspicker to see if I bought the wrong stuff, but it still says I am OK. I suspect pcpartspicker can not detect every little thing.

I want to be sure I am not doing something stupid first. Is it safe to run my memory with out it's hear sinc? Or am I over looking another solution?

Thanks in advance,

mrroid

I experienced a similar issue when I went from two to four sticks of memory and found that my Cooler Master Hyper 212 cooler was blocking the memory slot closest to the CPU. My solution was to move the fan to the other side of the cooler, in a "pull" configuration. This is not the best fan figuration for a cooler but it works fine for me - I'm not having any CPU temp overheating problems and can use all four RAM slots. Alternatively, I could have moved the fan and used a more desirable "push" configuration but did not opt to do this, as I did not want to be pushing air towards the front of my case and away from my rear exhaust fan.

Thanks for the tip rar_54.

I took another look at my motherboard after your post. You are right. If I pull one of the two fans on the Corsair H100iGTX cooler, I will have access to 4 memory slots, but loose access to 4 more. This will limit my memory to 32GBs and I could never populate it up to 64GBs.

I *guess* my H100iGTX will run with one fan and not two? Right now, I am set up so that both fans on the H100iGTX take case air, and blow it out over the radiator and out of the case.

Can I just pull one fan and call it good? What about pulling the heat sync on the top of the memory. Is that an option?

Thanks for the good feedback rar_54.

You don't have to move the fan on the 212 evo to the back, just lift it a bit, I've run Trident X under the fan which is height adjustable

How do you have the fans/rad mounted? Up top, I would guess. Might consider mounting the fans on top of the case with the Rad inside and blowing air from outside the case in, the air will be cooler from the outside so better cooling and free up the room inside, many people do it like this with cases that don't have a lot of room up top

Great idea Tradsman1. I will look at moving the fans top side and see what I come up with. So you think blowing cool room air from the outside across the radiator and into the PC is a better bet than sucking hot case out of the case and blowing that across the radiator?

It sure sounds better....

Thanks for the tip.
