How would i go by cloning a laptop drive onto an ssd through another computer?

I have an ssd and the current laptop hdd. How would i go about cloning to hdd to the ssd through my desktop? Can i just download something like macrium, hook up the drives through SATA cables, and clone away? Or is there anything else i should/have to do?

Edit: I think I misunderstood your post at first flush.

To answer your question, yes, make sure the data on the HDD drive is less than the total SSD size, hook them both up via SATA, and clone away!

The size has to fit the SSD
I usually use the onboard sata ports.

That's about it. You will want make sure that the ssd is aligned properly (HDD and SSD drive start in different places). But I think most current cloning software knows what to do.
