So i bought a limited edition xbox one console with a 1tb internal hdd. the console's motherboard fried and i decided to turn its hdd into an external one for my computer for personal usage. the hdd is manufactured by seagate. i added a casing (2.0) and decided to move files from my previously already full 500gb hdd to this "new" 1tb. the moving process was however interrupted and didn't complete successfully. when i tried continuing the moving process, the explorer window shows the files are moving at as high as 23mb/s for about five minutes, but then suddenly slows down quickly to 355kb/s and stagnates there for like ten minutes. it then drops to 0kb/s, then shortly prompts an alert window saying "file [name of file] cannot copy since source of destination cannot be read. [options: retry, skip, and cancel.]" checking my computer at this point shows the hdd is still connected and can even play or open all the files. copying or moving files to or from the hdd is the problem. i even changed the casing to a 3.0 but the problem persists. the data is extremely important but moved the files halfway through during the first attempt. i want to return the files back to my 500gb external and do away with the 1tb hdd but clearly cant. i tried disk checking, which windows repairs successfully, but the problem persists. im out of options. please please help.

Hey there, Dann!

Since changing the enclosure did not improve the transfer rate, I'd recommend you to test the HDD using its manufacturer's diagnostic tool from their website. Running the tests from the software will help you determine the health and S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive. You can also refer to this thread for some third-party testing utility suggestions: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
You could also try plugging the drive internally via SATA and see how the performance will be then. The drive might be failing, so you should also consider contacting the manufacturer's customer support for assistance. If the HDD is still under warranty, you could get a replacement from them.

Good luck! Keep us posted! :)

thanks. first, warranty is certainly not an option. i opened the xbox and broke the warranty seal. second, i'll try the diagnosis tools first, and if the problem persists, i'll use a SATA cable to copy and see how it goes. i'll then contact you and tell you how it went. thank you.
