Hi, i'm trying to improve some 2 old PCs i have at home for sister and dad. Both have an " IPMEL-Q5 ODM " motherboard. The CPU is a Intel Core Duo E7500.

I was thinking of upgrading them with 8 Gb of RAM DDR2 PC2-6400. Can i mix the RAMS in order to get 4gb (2x2 at 400mhz), and 8 gb (3x2 at 800mhz and 1 at 400mhz) ?

What would you recomend?

They've told me it's a SATA2 MOBA, so i'll buy a Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB each.

And, what do you think about the ram upgrade? I'm planning to install Win 8.1 Pro 64bit. By the way, the graphics cards would be Sapphire Radeon 4850 1gb GDDR3 and a Sapphire Radeon 6970 2gb GDDR5.

Oh, and what S.O would you recomend? w10? w8.1? Somebody told me the best would be w7. Thanks a lot :)

Thanks a lot

Solution
ram should be the same speed, so you'll want to fully replace teh DDR2 400.

Win 7 or 8 will work fine, Win 10 might not work, most companies did not test for 8+ year old designs. but it should be OK.

If you mix two RAMs with different brand then I wouldn't be surprised if you run into problems. Best thing to do would be to buy a new kit new kit of 2x4GB. Another point I should mention is if you mix two RAMs with different speeds, the system will run at the speed of the slowest RAM stick.
SSD is a good option just make sure it's compatible as that's an old motherboard. In terms of operating systems, it comes down to preference really. What OS you have won't make a massive difference. I am still running Win7 and I love it. I'd probably stay away from win10 for now until they iron out all the little problems

Okay, I'll stack the rams i have in both PCs now (the same) so i have 6gb (3x2) RAM in one, and buy 6 or 8 gb for the other one so they go with the same brand RAM. I guess i'll install win 8.1.

Thank you all!
