Roll my own - most bang for the buck in one that I can configure?

I have a part time home based business and use my current system for that and personal use. Not graphics intensive - no gaming or anything. Still using Win 7 because I don't know what higher version to trust yet.

My current tower is a refurbished Asus Essentio CG5270 2.5 GHz quad core with AMD CPU, 8GB and a 500GB drive. I've had this for about 5 years, I think, keep it backed up with Carbonite and a local Acronis cloned drive, but am still a little nervous about how much longer it may work until it quits.

But I don't see that the technology has moved a whole lot past this yet. Am I wrong?

I don't have money to throw around on the latest greatest, just for the sake of it.

But just for awareness sake, and musing a little, what's a good place where I could roll ( configure ) my own, with maybe another refurbed Asus tower? Most bang for the buck kind of thing?

Technology has come a long way. Don't let the CPU ghz number fool you. A modern quad core is more then twice as fast as you current quad. With that being said, it look like all you do is the basics. You would be surprised what a fresh install and a brand new SSD will do for your system.
