I have a Lenovo Ideapad z510, with a GT 740M, and i5-4200m. It's not a gaming laptop, but it worked well for almost a year now.

Couple of weeks ago i noticed a serious fps drop in games. Sometimes games work well for a short time after laptop is booted, but usually performance is poor from the start.
I noticed that cpu is usually working at ~30% usage, and gpu under 50%, but both RAM and GRAM usage is constantly growing.

any ideas what might be causing this?

Solution
Alright, I've found a solution, at least a temporary one.
Apparently this is a known issue with ideapad z510

Updating the bios should fix the issue. My battery is dead and you need to have it charged to install the update, but i've found that i can manually set the performance using ThrottleStop. I have to do it every time I boot the laptop, but until I fix my baterry, at least it works.

Thank you all for help!

What's your Temperatures like? This sounds like an overheating CPU- and/or GPU-chip. Could be caused by, for instance, a broken or generally not functioning heatsink or fan, or excessive amounts of dust inside of the computer.

You could try to monitor your temperatures by using HWMonitor. It's a monitoring programme to measure temperatures in your computer.

Good Luck!
Axel.

Thanks for the quick response, i will check the cooling

At the moment CPU and GPU temperatures are around 40c, going up to around 50c when i try gaming
At the last instance when pc was working well, the GPU temperature went up to 80c, and then performance dropped.
That seems like an overheating problem, but shouldn't performance go back to normal after the temperatures drop? In this case the poor performance lasts for days, even when i'm not using the laptop for longer periods of time.

The game i'm trying to run now is GTAV, and it was working flawlessly for months until now. I noticed huge problems with loading assets

^You can see a huge hole in the ground, and low quality textures, where landscape didn't load

Hmm. The fact that performance stays bad, might be because of a dying GPU. However, I'm actually not sure how to continue searching for the issue. You could take it apart and thourougly look for any obvious errors.

Good Luck!
Axel.

Check hdd with manufacturer's tool.

Check ram with memtest86+, boot it from an USB thumb drive.

Run furmark burnin

Run 3dmark basic edition (firestrike) AMD post the link which comes up at the end

Is the power connector plugged in or does it run on battery?

Update all drivers
Update bios, don't do it in Windows

Set Windows power management to balanced or high performance

I don't know what is the manufacturer's tool in this case, but i checked hdd with HD Tune

Ram test passed with no errors

In Furmark the GPU was working at almost full usage the whole time, and the temperature was never above 80c.

3dmark results

The laptop is plugged in for most of the time.

Drivers and bios are up to date, power management is set on high performance.

Thank you for all responses, I'm still hoping it's not a dying GPU :)

Update: Today I got to have a solid hour of uninterrupted gameplay before the FPS dropped. I noticed that before the drop both CPU and GPU were working at full capacity. After the drop, I tried GPU stress test, and CPU burner in Furmark. While GPU had ~100% usage, the CPU was maxed at 30%.

So I'm guessing it is more likely a CPU problem?

Indeed, could be a CPU issue.
If the CPU gets too hot, then it automatically de-clocks itself and lowering it's performance. This could mean that the CPU isn't quick enough to handle all the information from the GPU.

So, a thing called Throtteling might appear - When the CPU gets too hot, it can't handle all the information from the GPU. This might also result in getting lower performance after Overclocking, for instance.

Then I'd try to check the CPU for issues. Try running Prime95, or take the computer apart, and look for any visual damage, like a malfunctioning cooling unit.

Good Luck!
