Everytime I plug in my external hard drive on my macbook pro it comes up with an error message 'the mac osx is unable to repair the disk' but it does not do this when I put the same hard drive into my gaming pc which has windows 10 installed on it.

Run Seatools for Windows or DOS from your PC and run the short tests. If it passes run the long test. If you get any errors then replace the drive. Sounds like your Mac thinks something is wrong with the drive and tries to repair it. Windows might do the same after a while... I have a failed drive and when I plug it in Windows will eventually show me a message that it detected a failure and to backup the drive.

Hey there, Yc0540.

@ComputerSecurityGuy is right about that. It sounds like the drive is formatted with a native file system to Mac OS X (e.g. HFS+). On the other hand the drive might be having some sort of issues if it's not recognized. Would you please open Disk Management when you connect the drive to your Windows 10 computer and post a screenshot of what you see there? Here's a tutorial on how to test a hard drive for error on Mac OS X How to test a drive for defects or problems on a Mac.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.
