Hey,

I plan on replacing my current stock 1TB 5400RPM SSHD (currently WD) with another internal storage device with the same size. I have a laptop which unfortunately only supports one internal storage device and has no CD drive bay in where you could put a SSHD/HDD/SSD, so I can't make a mixture of these or whatsoever.

My question now is, shall I choose a 1TB 5400RPM SSHD from another manufacturer (Seagate or other) or a 1TB 7200RPM HDD, in particular this one: HGST Travelstar 7K1000?

The purpose of the new storage device will be storing the OS(es) (dual boot) as well as my data (games and so on). I've read here and in other forums but couldn't find a appropriate answer for my "problem". Or do you have a completely different idea, e.g. over USB 3.0?

Kind regards

P.S: If my thread is in the wrong category, please move.

Depending on the budget you can simply install a large capacity hard drive or an SSD and use and external hard drive like mentioned above.

The prices of SSD has come down, though still more expensive than hard drives. You might want to wait until Black Friday / Thanksgiving sales kick off in mid-November. If you go with the SSD + hard drive option and you take the laptop around with you, then install the games you want to play the most on the SSD and the other games on the hard drive.

As for the external hard drive, you have several options:

1. You can buy a self contained one like a 2.5" Western Digital Passport which is portable. I think goes up to a 2TB capacity. (I have a couple of these)

2. Buy a 2.5" bare hard drive, and buy a...

Thanks for the fast reply.
By "external USB disk" you mean something like this?

Kind regards

I have a Lenovo Y50, which has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port, so the USB 3.0 isn't the problem. Your recommendation, as I unterstand, is, that I should store games (and of course the OSes themselves) on the internal HDD, not on the external HDD?
As I have just asked: By an external USB 3.0 device you mean something like a "cage" that has a SATA port internally and "transforms" the data to a USB 3.0 port at the outside? So you mount and connect an internal storage device at the inside of the cage and connect it the way you would connect a normal USB stick?

Kind regards

Yes, and yes.
It seems that ready-made external drives are cheaper than do-it-yourself (buying separate USB 3.0 enclosure, and putting SATA drive inside).

3. Buy a 3.5" hard drive and use a docking station for it like the Thermaltake BlacX. This is not portable. I use it with my desktop.

4. See options 1 and 2, but for 3.5" hard drives.
