Hello guys!

I have a very simple question regarding graphics card and motherboard.
Is the Asrock z68 Extreme4 compatible with the the GTX970 and R9 390 graphics cards?
The asrock z68 Extreme4 has a 3x PCI-e 2.0 x16 interface while the GTX970 and R9 390 require a PCI-e 3.0 x16 slot. Will this cause any problems?

Thank you kindly,
Niels

Glamdringfh,

Thanks for the quick reply! I obviously won't run them at the same time haha.
It's just that i'm still doubting between the GTX 970 for 320euros or the R9 390 for 380euros. Your choice would be which card?

And could you support your saying that they will both run fine on this motherboard. Don't the PCI-e slots matter then?

Thanks alot!

To tack on to johnnyb's post (which is also important information to consider when choosing between these cards):

-PCIe is backwards compatible technology, so there aren't many restrictions between hardware that can use 2.0 and 3.0 technology. For gaming purposes there also isn't very much difference is actual performance. Here's a good article about PCIe on gaming performance:

Hey there,
This is shaba_.

I plugged the r9 390 in the upper PCIe slot as you told me. Everything is connected correctly according to me but when i start up the computer, it just gives a black screen and nothing more. The HDMI cable is plugged in correctly and the screen used to work with my previous HD 6870 crossfire setup.

Do you guys have any idea? Would love some quick responses please :D
Thanks in advance!

One more thing to know. I replaced my old 4gb 1333mhz ram memory with 2 new 4gb 1666mhz ram memory simultaneous with the new graphics card which reaaaally wasn't a bright idea.. Stupid mistake cause now i don't know what's causing the black screen!

Any clues please?

I have 4x DDR3 memory slots compatible with 1333mhz (current) and 1600mhz (new) RAM memory so i believe it doesn't matter where i put the memory in or am i wrong? Talking about the Asrock z68 Extreme4 motherboard.

We decided to replace the new memory with the old and try booting the computer up again but it seems to be failing as well.. We are getting kind of desperate since nothing we're trying is really working and it's getting pretty late here. I have to use my computer for school so i need it working as soon as possible

Hoping for some good answers concerning this problem.
Thanks!

If you're really desperate for support I suggest making a new thread, more people will look at a new thread and it sounds like you'll want as many eyes on this issue as possible.

It is also more appropriate to start a new thread when you have a different issue than the one first posted. I'll be happy to get the ball rolling as soon as the new thread is up!
