HI, I'm building my first gaming pc and I have no idea which power supply I should get. I have all my parts so far except for the power supply.
My mother board is an Msi z97 gaming 5 lag 1150
I have an Intel i7 4790k 4.0 ghz Devils canyon
Asus nvidia Gtx 970
A 1tb 7200 hard drive
A cd DVD combo
And 8 gb of ddr3 ram

System Power Supply Requirements for a single NVIDIA Reference Design GeForce GTX 970
NVIDIA specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. (Minimum system power requirement based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz 130 Watt TDP processor.)
the system power supply must also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 35 Amps or greater
the system power supply should also have at least two 75-Watt 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors. There are some non-reference design cards that require one 75-Watt 6-pin and one 150-Watt 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors or just one 150-Watt 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector or two 150-Watt 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most critical factor.

Overclocking of the CPU and/or GPU(s) may require an additional increase to the maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current ratings, recommended above, to meet the increase in power required for the overclock. The additional amount required will depend on the magnitude of the overclock being attempted.

What's your budget amount for the power supply unit?

a little extra power won't hurt at all. if the upgrades you plan on are simply ssd's and fans and such, then the 550w evga g2 above is plenty of power. if you think a second gpu might be in the future, then the 750w one is better for you. 650w is too much for what you have now, yet not really enough for a second gpu so it really is a bad choice for your needs.

think hard about what upgrades you may wish to do and plan accordingly.
